“Quality, clean and comfy and hospitable without a few practical, luxury splashes. (Room 145)”
Mercure hotel Swansea review (Room 145) (8/10)
The atmosphere on reception was therapeutic and assisted by the tranquil music. After a long shift, relaxing on the sofas near reception almost lead to a bout of sleep which was very pleasant.
Chilling in your room
In the room itself the ambience was very positive. It was well stocked with a selection of goodies including macadamia nut shampoo ( mini bottles) and a range of tea accessories including teas of the flavours : Breakfast, Earl grey and Peppermint. There were a range of sweetening sugars and sweeteners replenished based on customer preference. It would have been great to have some mints or similar condiment such as tea biscuits.
Clean towels in and outside the en-suite bathroom were supplied. The view from my window was highly monotonous and whilst a kettle was included, it was very small. The dimmers on the bedside lamp flickered on adjustment and the en suite door would not close. On the upside, bedside lights were available and there was actually an en-suite present in stark contrast to the hostels I have previously resided in. Nothing like a midnight magical mystery tour to find a bathroom or toilet …
Whilst the bed backrest was firm it offered some much needed back support for TV viewing. The TV provided worked well despite being slightly small for the space available. It would have been nice to have 2 chairs since it was a twin room but for chilling the provisions were sufficient for me.
After chilling, the bed itself was comfortable enough for a shift end tranquilliser every night. If in doubt that means very comfy.
At reception there were some nice comfortable sofas … There was not a communal lounge or kitchen since things were quite self contained … This is likely due to the nature of more private hotel residences when contrasted to cheaper hostels.
To make up for this however, there was an on-site swimming pool and sauna which although I didn’t use, did scream luxury in concept.
As was the case everything else (such as reception) this was signposted clearly on a map provided on my room door.
Washing and cleaning
The shower was bone fide !
One twist of the top knob meant shower activation with good pressure. The temperature was also dead simple to adjust in principle with the lower knob. The temperature did not change much however despite these practical controls.
A hairdryer was provided which was fully operational. The room service was prompt with a call at 9 am sharp to maintain optimal cleanliness and tidiness standards.
All provisions were replaced as left so the full selection was available everyday for my 3 night stay which was a huge positive. The beds were well made by room service and my personal belongings were left alone. All of this seemed very impressive.
At 75 pounds per night and a 3 star hotel I would expect plenty of space, good room service and plenty of little extra touches. This should include a working TV and high levels of cleanliness and comfort. Drawers for storage in the room were ample.
Breakfast included would have been nice although menus for order with the offer of a breakfast in bed cheered up its appeal.
Having accidentally locked my keycard in my room like a total melon, the staff replaced it quickly and politely after a short wait and hospitable chat with the guy on main reception. The wait was due to the reception desk not being manned when I needed assistance on day 1 which was a little inconvenient. Before leaving I asked reception to pass on a note to another guest. The lady felt obliged to do so and carried out this effectively. I found this out by checking the message got through to the target recipient later on. Overall then customer service when provided was certainly good despite not being available 100% of the time.
An almost perfect stay with just a few little touches to be improved to make the stay splendid. A larger TV and 2 chairs in addition to included breakfast in the price for me would have been nice. The value for money was good for the cleanliness and comfort boasted.
